Understanding normal facial changes with age

Faces change throughout life. Skin, underlying fat, muscle, connective tissue and bone can all contribute to changes in appearance. The timing and pattern vary between people.

Changes beneath the skin

Facial fat is distributed in separate compartments. Over time, its volume and distribution can change, alongside changes in supporting tissues and the facial skeleton. These changes can affect contours and the way light and shadow fall across the face.

There is no single pattern that everyone follows. Genetics, health and environmental factors can contribute to differences in appearance.

A normal part of life

Age-related changes are normal and do not create a need for cosmetic treatment. A photograph or general article cannot assess your health or determine whether a procedure would be appropriate for you.

If you have questions about your skin, seek an individual assessment. Any discussion of procedures should include suitability, potential benefits, risks, alternatives and the option of no treatment.
